Xarchiver

News and changes

2007

31/12/07
Xarchiver has a page at Wikipedia and at LinuxPedia, the free Italian Linux Encyclopedia.
20/12/07
Development is progressing but it takes time; the archive navigation code has introduced a LOT of changes (and problems) to the code.
22/08/07
With the revision 25999 ISO support was dropped; isomaster is better!
02/08/07
I added a cool screenshot showing how the new 0.5 will be like with archive navigation and mimetype icons.
31/07/07
After some months the development has started again and archive navigation is finally coded.
15/01/07
Time is going on but the development is proceeding, slowly but it's proceeding. Currently I'm implementing archive navigation. Please check the svn changelog for details about the development.

2006

20/12/06
Any volunteer for integrating dar support in Xarchiver, maybe using the dar API instead of the cmd-line tools?
19/12/06
Updated the roadmap.
04/12/06
I'm planning the preferences dialog. Would you like to include a particular option? If so please drop me an email, thanks.
01/12/06
Updated the roadmap for release 0.5.
27/11/06
Xarchiver 0.4.6 released for fixing the missing icons when installing it; thanks to J. Guillemin for providing the patch.
23/11/06
Xarchiver 0.4.4 released! New features and bug fixes; please refer to the Changelog link for a full review.
15/11/06
While bug fixing and translations are in progress I updated the screenshot section.
09/11/06
I announced the string freeze on xfce-i18n mailing list. I'm waiting for the translators to complete the various translations.
05/11/06
XFCE 4.4RC2 has been released with the release 0.4.2 of Xarchiver. Next stable release of Xarchiver will be 0.4.4.
31/10/06
'Firefox like tabs' have been implemented but some unexpected GUI behaviours need to be corrected. So bug checking and code cleanup will take time...
19/10/06
Progress is going fastly toward the 0.4.1. I completed sfx ability for ARJ/RAR/ZIP/7ZIP and archive comment support for ARJ and ZIP. The support for rar comment is more difficult since it is compressed in the archive itself, wanna help me to support it also?
12/10/06
GValue removal is done. The memory usage lowered a lot, while the speed increased. I updated the roadmap.
09/10/06
I'm currently reverting the code who fills the liststore with the archive content to the old code present in 0.3.x since the use of GValues in the 0.4 it's very memory hungry.
04/10/06
DEB support completed; see the roadmap.
27/09/06
Progressing toward 0.4.1 is going smoothly but slowly. Want to help me?
05/09/06
Updated the roadmap.
01/09/06
I'm proud to FINALLY release the long developed 0.4 in 16 languages !!! Plenty of new features and bug fixes. This version took four months of developments but it was worth the while ! Please refer to the Changelog link for a full list of changes.
31/08/06
The 0.4 is ready to be packaged and uploaded to sf.net, I'm just waiting for the translators to update their translations.
30/08/06
Updated features and FAQ web pages.
28/08/06
Xarchiver needs testers; please download the current svn revision (see news of May 24th) and stress it. I would like to release the 0.4 by the end of this week. Thank you.
21/08/06
I discover another distro including Xarchiver: ddbackup
02/08/06
Updated the screenshot again, showing the iso information window! At present only one critical bug is left to be fixed. I think by the end of the month the long developed 0.4 will see the light!
12/07/06
Another distro, KateOS, has included Xarchiver as default archive manager !
12/07/06
Updated the screenshot section showing the brand new features, enjoy it!
10/07/06
Xarchiver 0.3.9.2beta2 released. Plenty of features !! Please refer to the Changelog link for a full list. Keep in mind that this is a beta release. Please submit the bugs to xfce.bugzilla.org and not to sourceforge bug system. Thanks.
05/07/06
The bug fixing is getting longer but hopefully with not last forever :) in the meantime I updated the roadmap.
22/06/06
FINALLY, everything is completed. Now I will begin fixing the bugs, expect a beta test to try out next week !
09/06/06
Ok, the extract dialog is finally completed. Now I'm coding the command line switches. The -x one is already developed. The 0.4 is quite close now... even though they are very hard to be coded.
05/06/06
I'm currently working on the brand new extract dialog. Most of the important own's archiver options are supported. Now are left: 1) Add dialog, 2) Command line switches, 3) Fixing of the actual bugs. Would you like to help me fix them out ?
24/05/06
I think the current Xarchiver development code on svn is quite stable, I encorauge all of you to download and test it while the development still goes on, I'm currently developing ISO support, then the command line switches for Thunar integration and the brand new extract dialog. To retrieve the current code you have to install subversion and issue from the command line:
$ svn co http://svn.xfce.org/svn/xfce/xarchiver/trunk
Then run ./autogen.sh to compile the code. I think you should have the XFCE development tools but this is only for the svn version.
19/05/06
I reverted the current svn development code back to the old 0.4 tarball I was developing before joining XFCE team. So expect a beta test to try and "to bug fix" soon. More info here.
04/05/06
Xarchiver 0.3.3 is out ! I fixed a bug in the opening of .tar.bz2 and .tar.gz archives, sorry for this !
29/04/06
I'm proud to announce Xubuntu has added Xarchiver among its packages. This is the second distro, as far as I know, that uses Xarchiver.
28/04/06
Since the development time of release 0.4 is getting longer and longer, I released Xarchiver 0.3.2, a bug fix release that solves a couple of annoying bugs, one of which is critical.
06/04/06
Most of the work to separate the core function from the GUI has been accomplished. The GUI is still under heavy development. If you want to test it, actually xarchiver on svn can only open arj (to be fixed),tar, rar and zip archives.
27/03/06
Another developer, Stephan Arts, joined Xarchiver. I'm currently separating the core functions from the GUI, while he is developing the GUI without GLADE stuff. Stay tuned !
23/03/06
I'm pleased to announce Xarchiver is the official archive manager for XFCE. The new web site as you can see is http://xarchiver.xfce.org. There is also svn support that replaces bzr.
22/03/06
I have been told that retrieveing sources from sf.net is very very slow, I'm looking for an alternative, please be patient.
20/03/06
Thanks to Daniele Favara, Xarchiver development sources can be retrieved from sf.net with bzr, a new Python revision control system:
$bzr branch http://xarchiver.sourceforge.net/xarchiver
17/03/06
DnD is completed but extraction on the fly to the filesystem will not work with Konqueror. The date of this request is 2001, what a shame for KDE !
09/03/06
A new developer, Salvatore Santagati joined the project. He is developing full ISO support, while myself is coding the preferences part. Stay tuned, 0.4 is on the way !
21/02/06
I'm pleased to announce Zenwalk is the first distro to officially include Xarchiver amongs its packages !
16/02/06
I just googled for xarchiver and I found a desktop screenshot showing Xarchiver among other apps, cool !
13/02/06
I added a FAQ page. Feel free to contribute to it.
13/02/06
A bug in deleting files from .tar.gz archives transforms them in .tar.bz2. Please open src/bzip2.c and add this line:
type = dummy;
immediately after the { at line 206 and recompile. This bug is already fixed in the forthcoming 0.4 release.
